Give me magic, gadgets, monsters, zombies, everything that seems impossible, and throw in some tough chicks with swords. That's the stuff.

Must-Have-Books Coming Soon

Yes, my TBR list runneth over, as usual. In the next couple of months there are even more books coming out that I really want to read. In particular, there are some continuing series and trilogy conclusions that I need to get my hands on.

Soul Thief (Demon Trappers bk 2) by Jana Oliver

I wrote about the awesomeness that is Riley in my YA Urban Fantasy post. Now she, Beck, Simon, and the rest of the Trappers are back in book 2. I'm sure creepy Ori will be there too. I can't freaking wait! Highly recommend this series - it's a bit darker, grittier and closer to adult UF than a lot of other paranormal YA. Book 1 is The Demon Trapper's Daughter. Check out Oliver's site too (here's the one for the Demon Trappers contest). She runs a lot of contests and you might just win a book or another great prize. Out August 30.

Hellbent (Cheshire Red bk 2) by Cherie Priest

My favorite OCD vampire thief is back. I can't wait to see how she adjusts to having people in her life. The loner is going to have some moments, I think. Also can't wait for the next thrilling caper, conspiracy, or to find out how Adrian fits into those drag queen costumes (I can't imagine that obsessive Ray is going to let that question linger too long). If you haven't tried this series yet, love your stories action-packed with quirky characters, then go get Bloodshot (bk 1) and enjoy the ride. Out September 6.

Empire of Ruins (Hunchback Assignments bk 3) by Arthur Slade

The continuing adventures of Modo and Octavia and the shadowy Mr. Socrates as they battle the Clockwork Guild for queen and country. Great middle school age steampunk series, and this one is set in Egypt. Out September 13.

Goliath (Leviathan #3) by Scott Westerfeld

Westerfeld's thrilling steampunk/WWI inspired middle school/YA series comes to a close this September. Edge of your seat adventure, well-drawn characters, and fantastic gadgets/beasties (if you've read this series you know what I mean, otherwise go get Leviathan now). Out September 20.

Ganymede (Clockwork Century #4) by Cherie Priest

This time the action is set in New Orleans and I do believe there is a sub. A sub! I'm all in my 20,0000 Leagues Under the Sea squeedom right now. I can count on Priest for lots of action and hardened characters who get the job done come hell or high water. Set in an alternate late 1800s where the Civil War has lasted 2 decades, airships are the way to travel, and you have to fight the occasional zombie. This is my kind of western. Out September 27.

Kingdom of Gods (Inheritance bk3) by N.K. Jemisin

I'm almost hyperventilating just thinking about getting my hands on this one. It's the final book in Jemisin's amazing Inheritance trilogy. Book 1, Hundred Thousand Kingdoms has been racking up award nominations left and right, and book 2, Broken Kingdoms, was the first book in a long time that made me cry. I freaking cried (Oree and Mad when she finds out the truth about herself - just damn). Beautifully written, amazing characters and world-building, a must read. Out October 27.

  2. Something is holding me back from reading Cherie Priest and I am not even sure what it might be. What you have said about her books tip the scales a bit for me. Thanks...

  3. @Wheels. Cherie Priest is good, but very different. She's got a lot of mix of styles in there. Kind of gothic. Kind of...I dunno. It's like her characters might be on drugs or something. :>)

I just ordered more books. I probably didn't need to. :>)

  4. Thanks Maria, I am always looking for new books to read in fantasy. I am so wrapped up in Changes by Jim Butcher that my mind can not put it down. Next I need to read Butcher's Ghost Story and Erin Hoffman's Sword of Fire and Sea. After all that I will probably give Priest a serious shot.

    Have a great day!!!
